thrifting with tricia
Hello friends,
Some of you may know of Tricia. And if you know of Tricia, you can imagine what it might be like to go thrift shopping with her. Which is, as a matter of fact, what I did today. Followed by a chicken dinner with Margaritas. It was a lovely day. One of the loveliest I've had in a long time.
Tricia in one of her more conservative outfits. From the Adorn Magazine blog.
Tricia is the queen of wardrobe remix. Truly. If you read her blog or look at her flickr, you know this. Well, Tricia and I have fast become friends in the last few months, and today was our first joint thrifting adventure. Quite a thrill, indeed, to thrift with someone who seeks out the most outlandish items so that she can work them into crazy ass, but frickin' hot outfits. I kept asking her, when I picked things up for myself, "Is this hot or not?" She was so kind in response. And diplomatic. Now, I am a very experienced thrifter. Been thrifting since college, and I am almost 40 years of age. But I do not consider myself so much a fashion re-mixer per se since I haven't ever documented my outfits. And then there's my job that forbids me from being fashionable at all (it seems to be against the rules, oops), and so many of my days are spent in outfits much more boring than I'd like.
Anyhow.
So thrifting with Tricia was like visiting a dark cave with someone with bionic vision (or something like that). Truly, within 5 minutes of our entrance to each store, she already had a handful of stuff that was a) completely her style b) completely rad, and c) completely not what I would pick out for myself necessarily. I did find some shoes for her which she ended up buying, which made my very proud. Because she was able to work so fast within a short period of time, she'd spend the rest of the time in each store at my side, helping me pick things out for myself, encouraging a patchwork square dancing skirt over a $9 pair of miu miu's, laughing with me as I read the brand labels of all the vintage clothing (Have you ever read vintage brand labels? They are a hoot).
Tricia is a true artist. I so admire her style and sense of individuality. It's inspiring for me to be around people like Tricia. And did you know she's also incredibly articulate and interesting and funny and kind?
Yay for new friends. Yay for Tricia.

now i'm gonna cry! :P haha, lisa, you are the most awesome friend, ever. :) for a myriad of reasons. and we just started being friends, which makes it that much more rad.

I'm so jealous! I've lurked around Tricia's WR Flickrpool, and I love to see her recent loot every time I visit. There's some good stuff to be found in the city! I pilfer every thrist store in my 30-mile radius, not coming close to the fabulous color and pattern that you seem to find more of in town. But Silicon Valley is down with the secondhand housewares ;)

Can you please send Tricia over my way (Melbourne). WE have so many thrift shops (or op shops as we call them) and apart from the occasional scarf find, I never seem to find anything great. I obviously don't have the vision - or a friend like Tricia!
